China-berry is a 45 foot tree with a rounded crown. It can be found growing in the Edwards Plateau region in various soil types. It was introduced as an ornamental from Asia and has escaped to grow wild in much of Texas. The leaves are up to 25 inches in length with leaflets ranging from 1 1/4 to 2 inches long. The small, white to pale lavendar flowers bloom from March to May. The smooth, yellowish fruit ripens in September and October and is eaten by birds, but is toxic to goats and pigs. The leaves are also toxic to these animals.Meliatoxins A1, A2, and A3 are responsible for the toxicity of of this plant. Symptoms include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, depression, and convulsions.
