Carolina Snailseed is found in the Edwards Plateau and the South Texas Plains. It can be found growing on fences and low shrubs in well-drained moist soils. The flowers are greenish white and found on loose racemes, 1 to 6 inches long. The leaves are dark green and are 2-4 inches in length. The bright red, somewhat flattened fruit are up to two inches in diameter and are consumed by many varieties of birds. Each fruit has a single seed that is flat and spiral-shaped, hence the name Snailseed.
