Work with county agents, county committees and district directors to plan disease control
programs. Plan programs with scientists throughout the TAMU System. Work with
industry personnel and resource groups to develop plans and secure financial
support.

Interpret research and relevant publications to agents, specialists and other scientists to keep
staff current on plant disease occurrence and control. Conduct in-depth training for agents on
plant pathology. Use site visits, telephone calls, correspondence, Extension publications, and
diagnosis of plant samples submitted by agents to improve agent competence in diagnostics
and control programs.
Educational Programs for Clientele

Assist county agents with field days, crop tours, producer meetings, demonstrations,
newsletters, media releases and publications. Provide diagnostics directly or with assistance
from the Diagnostic Laboratory in College Station for samples from growers, consultants,
industry personnel, other agencies and urban clientele. Train volunteers in plant pathology
(Master Gardener programs).
Peanut - Contribute to variety development efforts for resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), cause of spotted wilt disease.
Apple - Contribute to efforts to collect native hawthorn (Crataegus) species and screening
for cotton root rot (caused by Phymatotrichum omnivorum) resistance and testing as
rootstocks for local apple production.
Spinach - Assist with variety development efforts for resistance to white rust (caused by Albugo occidentalis) and a virus complex involving cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), beet curly top virus (BCTV), beet western yellows virus (BWYV), and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV).
